Job Description
We are seeking a skilled and safety-focused Heavy Equipment Operator to join our team. The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for operating a variety of heavy machinery used in construction, excavation, roadwork, site preparation, and material handling. This role requires precision, strong awareness of surroundings, and a commitment to maintaining equipment and following all safety procedures.
The ideal candidate has experience operating equipment such as excavators, bulldozers, loaders, graders, backhoes, skid steers, and other machinery as needed. The Heavy Equipment Operator will work closely with supervisors, ground crews, and other team members to complete projects efficiently, safely, and on schedule.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate heavy equipment in a safe and efficient manner
- Perform site preparation, grading, trenching, digging, lifting, loading, and material movement
- Inspect equipment before and after use to ensure proper operation
- Report mechanical issues, maintenance needs, or safety concerns promptly
- Follow project plans, site instructions, and company safety policies
- Work with ground crews and supervisors to complete assigned tasks accurately
- Maintain a clean and organized work area
- Assist with routine equipment maintenance and basic servicing
- Ensure compliance with workplace safety regulations and operating standards
- Adapt to different job sites, weather conditions, and project requirements
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred
- Previous experience operating heavy equipment in construction, civil work, landscaping, or related industries
- Valid heavy equipment operator certification or training is an asset
- Strong understanding of equipment safety practices and job site procedures
- Ability to read site plans, grade stakes, and work instructions is an asset
- Good communication and teamwork skills
- Strong attention to detail and awareness of surroundings
- Reliable, punctual, and able to work independently when needed
Requirements
- Proven ability to operate one or more types of heavy equipment safely and effectively
- Valid driver’s license; CDL or other applicable license may be required depending on the role
- Ability to pass background checks, drug screening, or fit-for-duty testing if required
- Physically able to sit, stand, climb, bend, and work long hours outdoors
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds when needed
- Willingness to work overtime, weekends, or travel to job sites as required
- Knowledge of daily equipment inspections and preventive maintenance checks
- Commitment to following all health and safety regulations
Preferred Skills
- Experience with GPS-guided or laser-guided equipment
- Experience in road construction, underground utilities, demolition, or earthworks
- Mechanical knowledge for minor troubleshooting and maintenance
- OSHA or other safety training certifications
